John Mixon, the former head football coach at the University of Nevada, Reno and New Mexico State University, passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2022, at the age of 82.Mixon was best known for coaching the Nevada Wolf Pack to the NCAA Division I Football Championship Game in 1979. He was also instrumental in bringing New Mexico State University back to the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) level in 1993.Mixon was born in 1940 in Fort Worth, Texas. He played college football at the University of North Texas and began his coaching career as an assistant coach at his alma mater in 1964. He later served as an assistant coach at the University of Arkansas, the University of Tulsa, and the University of Houston before taking over as head coach at Nevada in 1976.Mixon spent six seasons at Nevada, compiling a record of 54-23. He led the Wolf Pack to four Big Sky Conference championships and three NCAA Division I playoff appearances. In 1979, he led Nevada to the NCAA Division I Football Championship Game, where they lost to Eastern Kentucky.In 1987, Mixon took over as head coach at New Mexico State University. He spent 11 seasons at the helm of the Aggies, compiling a record of 58-65-1. In 1993, he led New Mexico State back to the FBS level after the Aggies had spent 20 years in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).Mixon retired from coaching in 1997.
